Success psychologists say that 95% – 97% of the people in the world do NOT have their goals in writing and as a result fail, while only 3-5% have written goals and achieve success. (1)
Taking into account the above statistic, it is clear to see why the majority of people feel like they are drifting through life, taking each day as it comes… um… BECAUSE THEY ARE!
For the majority, writing goals feels like a waste of time when they are already “too busy” living a life they aren’t all that satisfied with! We are going to be a little bit blunt and say to you (if you fall into the majority category)…. WAKE UP! It’s time to take responsibility for your life and stop blaming others for your circumstances, or for NOT being where you want to be in life!
Over the next week, we would like to talk about goal setting for 2012, how to put your goals into action, and how to turn your desires into reality.
Taking time to write and review your goals should be at the top of your priority list for 2012. We cannot stress the importance of getting your goals onto paper! When you have your goals written down, and you are reviewing them and working towards them every day, you will have more focus, more energy, more passion, and more excitement towards life! You will not simply be “floating” through life like the rest of the herd.

One of the most important aspects of goal setting is having a clear motivation or a strong “why”. Quite often people say things like “I want to earn $200,000 this year!”, but when faced with the question “Why?” they um and arr and aren’t really too sure why they desire that level of income. Having a strong and compelling purpose for the money is more likely to inspire them to achieve that goal.
For instance, they might want to set up a school for disadvantaged children, and that is something that they are more passionate about than just earning loads of cash. With all of your goals, find your motivation and write it down, get emotional about it, and visualise yourself achieving that goal. Does it bring you fulfilment or a sense of pride – like you know you will go to any lengths to have it? If so, there’s your “why”!
When we talk about goals, we don’t mean that all goals have to be life changing, or long term massive goals. In fact, it’s beneficial to categorise your goals into ‘Short Term’, ‘Medium Term’ and ‘Long Term’. This helps to break your long term goals into smaller more attainable goals, which makes them less intimidating.
When you are feeling more comfortable about your goals, you are more likely to work towards and achieve them. This also gives you the chance to celebrate successes in the short term, because everyone likes to feel a sense of accomplishment, and this encourages you to keep moving forward to your medium and long term goals.
“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.”
~ Zig Ziglar
So please write down some goals you would like to achieve in 2012 – short, medium and long term, and in our next article we will go into more detail about how to make these become a reality.
