Agrimony

Agrimony is the herb of choice when helping the digestive system, especially with children. Agrimony helps to ease irritations and infections of the intestinal tract and eases acid reflux of the stomach. Agrimony also tightens tissues, especially within the bladder to ease bladder incontinence and can be used safely in children for easing bedwetting problems.

Astragalus

Astragalus is a well known Chinese herb for balancing the immune system. It is also used as a tonic to improve the body after infections, surgery and or after long term disease processes. It promotes increased activity of the immune system encouraging the body to fight off viruses. However Astragalus should not be taken during an acute cold or flu attack. It is best used to improve or restore the immune system.

Agnus Castus

Agnus Castus has been used widely in assisting with menstrual problems. It helps with premenstrual problems,including women who lack a menstrual cycle and women who have severe symptoms in the second half of the month with symptoms such as headaches, mood swings and stomach cramps. Agnus-Castus may also help women who find they have low milk production during breast feeding. Agnus-Castus is very widely used by herbalists to help in infertility . An open study was performed in September 2000 identifying the effectiveness of Agnus Castus. The study revealed that after 3 cycles 93% of patients reported significant decrease or even cessation of Premenstrual Tension complaints, such as irritability, breast tenderness, cramps and relief of headaches.

Angelica

Angelica is used to help with the convalescence of patients with debilitating illnesses especially where the patient has been feeling cold or chilly. Angelica helps to improve debilitated digestive and liver conditions. If you find you have pain under the rib cage/reflux/sour stomach/bloating/gas, if you sigh and find yourself easily upset then Angelica may help. Angelica helps in fever management where the condition has been long term. Angelica is also used in children with respiratory ailments such as asthma.

Albizzia

Albizzia is an Ayurvedic herb from India. Albizzia has a long history of use in treating the allergenic person, for allergenic rhinitis (itchy nose), allergenic asthma, eczema and urticaria ( red blotches on the skin). The herb also has antifungal and antibacterial properties, enabling Albizzia to be an effective remedy for infections. It can also relax smooth muscle, especially of the respiratory tract, thus easing coughing and the tight chest feeling associated with asthma.

Bupleurum

Bupleurum, an ancient Chinese Herb is probably one of China's most used herbs and is a major herb of the liver. In clinical trials for chronic active liver conditions, Bupleurum has proved to be most effective. If you are suffering from irritability, anxiety, depression, if you find you 'sigh', have pain under the right rib cage, suffer from gritty sore eyes, sour taste and or muscular aches and pains, the herb Buplerum may help to overcome these signs and symptoms. Bupleurum is often used in China with the herb Dong Quai. This combination is fantastic for helping alievate mood swings, irritability, anger, menopausal symtpoms of hot flushes and helps to improve energy levels in the body. The herb is useful for acute infections, common colds with chills and fever and with chronic cough. It also helps in gynaecology to ease painful menstration.

Brahmi

Brahmi has been used for over 5000 years by millions of people on the Indian Sub Continent as a brain tonic to improve memory, assist with learning difficulties and for the treatment of cognitive disorders of aging. It also helps promote longevity and improve mental performance. Brahmi also has a calming effect and can help in cases of ADD and ADHD, epilepsy, nervous breakdown and exhaustion.

Callendula

Callendula has a long history of usage in helping to ease damaged or ulcerated mucous membranes of the gastro intestinal tract like ulcers, gum disease and throat infections. Callendula is one of the best herbs used externally for cleaning wounds. By placing this herbal extract on external cuts, abrasions etc., these wounds heal in half the time when compared to other healing agents. It is also effective with conditions marked by swollen lymph nodes.

Chamomile

Chamomile is often used by herbalists in helping relieve all states of tension and for easing spasm in all smooth muscles helping to alleviate nervous dyspepsia and nervous bowel or irritable bowel, including upset stomach including nausea, bloating, cramps etc. Chamomile also has properties which help to heal and protect stomach and duodenal ulcers. Chamomile assists with nervous headaches and sleeplessness so is especially good for children because it calms without making you drowsy. Chamomile is also used to ease period pain and menopausal tension. It assists in fever management and is used as an inhalation for post nasal drip and or phlegm conditions and allergic reactions of the airways such as hayfever, sinus, etc. Chamomile can be applied topically to assist in wound healing and as a poultice.

Couch Grass

Couch Grass is an excellent remedy in helping to ease the symptoms of urinary diseases from infections to kidney stones and even enlargement of the prostate. It assists in healing the urinary membranes and is particularly effective for children's conditions in helping to manage problems in the urinary system when bedwetting seems to be a constant problem.

Damiana

Damiana is used by herbalists to help in states of depression. Damiana also helps in cases of severe energy loss after operations or several years of hard work. Damiana assists with sexual inadequacies giving an improved libido providing a general stimulating and enhancing influence on those functions related to the reproductive system, especially in males. Damiana also helps to ease constipation or a slow bowel and helps with nervous tension, stress and anxiety.

Dong Quai

Dong Quai is used by herbalists for painful, irregular or scanty menstrual periods, especially when accompanied by cramping and nervous tension. Dong Quai assists in situations of weakness or anaemia. Dong Quai helps in menopausal symptoms especially easing hot flushes, irritability and melancholy. It also helps with fleeting muscle and joint pain especially those made worse by damp, rainy conditions.

The root of the Dandelion

The root of the Dandelion is used to help restore liver and gall bladder problems. The herb also helps to ease bloating and general upset stomach feelings, constipation and eases the symptoms of gall bladder problems. Dandelion contains much more nutritional value than many other vegetables or herbs, being particularly high in iron, minerals, proteins, choline, insulin, pectin and is very high in beta carotenoid content. Dandelion is therefore an extremely gentle tonic for the liver and for gall bladder problems. It can help quicken recovery from jaundice and for toxic conditions such as joint and skin inflammations.

Devils Claw

Devils Claw has a long herbal usage in helping rheumatic and other joint diseases especially inflammation of the connective tissues (e.g. myalgia, fibrositis, tendonitis (tennis or golfer's elbow)). Further the herb helps with conditions like general arthritisc conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, lower back pain and neuralgia or nerve pain. The herb has to be taken for a considerable time before the overall effect can be felt.

Elecampane

After the winter and spring cold and flu season both Elecampane and Eyebright can be used in any immune system formula. Elecampane is specific for any type of irritable cough especially the irritating congestive cough of children. It has a strengthening tonic action on the lungs and is indicated for wet, mucousy coughs with large amounts of sputum. It is also used for persistent coughs of the elderly.

Eyebright

Eyebright is the herb of choice for mucous, phlegm and catarrhial conditions from any origin whether it be from colds, flu, sinus, hayfever, asthma, chronic bronchitis, middle ear infection and conjunctivitis. It has an anti-inflammatory action and tightens mucous membranes. Constantly many people find relief of their chronic mucous problems especially in helping to ease hayfever, sinus, middle ear infection.

Echinacea

Echinacea is helpful for conditions like infected tonsils, abscesses, colds, flu or for that matter any infective condition whether acute or long standing especially if aided by debility and cold. Echinacea helps to improve overall health by improving resistance and helping to recover from many infective conditions. Echinacea also works both locally (as in mouth ulcers) and systemically (candida and colitis) on the gastro intestinal tract to eradicate bacterial infection. It has been recognised as an appetizer to improve digestion, quieten upset, nauseous and anxious stomachs and to calm intestinal digestion.

Euphorbia

Euphorbia is a useful herb for the lungs especially when coughing is the major symptom. Euphorbia relaxes bronchial smooth muscle and is excellent for post nasal drip and mucous associated with any infection. The herb helps in conditions like asthma, bronchitis, upper respiratory tract infection and left over coughs from any type of lung infection. For lingering coughs that don't want to go away Euphorbia may help. Euphorbia is a great herb when used in combination with other herbs like Echinacea.

Fenugreek has a long history of use in helping to reduce the symptoms of low blood sugar. Episodes of low blood sugar may occur before or after eating. If food has not been taken on a regular basis the low blood sugar or hypoglycemic person may experience light-headiness, fatigue and or a trembling feeling. On the other hand, after eating, the hypoglycaemic person feels a false hunger and a strong desire for something sweet. Sweet cravings, irritability, poor concentration and headaches are common and sometimes many other symptoms are associated with low blood sugar. Fenugreek is also useful in overcoming nutrition and digestion problems. Clinical experience has shown it restores appetite, strength and metabolism. It is good in motherhood because Fenugreek can help restore the flow of milk during breastfeeding.

Feverfew

Feverfew is a primary remedy in helping to ease headaches, including migraines. If headaches have been removed or eased by applying heat Feverfew is the herb most suited. Because of one of Feverfew active components is an anti-inflammatory, this herb may help in the early stages of arthritis and can be used in vertigo and tinnitus. Feverfew can also be used as a relaxant to help with digestion.

Fennel

Fennel is often used by herbalists because it can greatly assist with flatulence and other disturbances of the bowel and intestinal functions such as irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulitis. Fennel gives relief with griping colic and helps where there is in adequate digestive tone. Fennel can be used externally for eyewashes where the eye is itchy, reddened and teary and for a throat gargle easing sore throats. Fennel also aides in the production of breast milk.

Fumitory

Fumitory is an excellent blood cleanser especially when applied topically to chronic skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis, and may help in conditions where there has been liver or bile problems. Fumitory helps to calm biliary colic in gall bladder diseases. Fumitory can also ease the pain associated with migraines and or headache.

Gentian

Gentian is frequently used by herbalists to assist with conditions of chronic inflammatory problems such as Ulcerative Colitis and Chrones disease, especially where digestion is less than ideal and causing pain, colic and bloating. Gentian has a beneficial action even on those who have a very sensitive digestive system, and is especially good for unexplained weight loss. Gentian helps to increase digestive secretions and to calm intestinal and gastric inflammations easing burping, wind, pain, reflux and bloating. Gentian also assists in liver and gall bladder problems.

Greater Celandine

Greater Celandine helps to stop spasm of smooth muscle especially of the gall bladder and its ducts. So it is a great herb for those who find themselves unwell after a fatty fried meal. The symptoms may include feelings of nausea, pain on the right lower rib and or middle back area and is usually associated with headaches, from the mild to the more severe type like migranes. It stimulates pancreatic juices by helping with digestion, has a normalising action on the gall bladder and may help in most conditions involving gall bladder and its bile ducts.

Korean Ginseng

Korean Ginseng is especially effective for helping to ease stress levels. It assists and supports the constitution when it is under attack by stressors. It relaxes the central nervous system making one feel more relaxed. Ginseng assists in debilitated, degenerative conditions and assists with problems of old age, such as dementia and loss of energy. Ginseng can be used in the short term for the improvement of stamina without making excessive demands on carbohydrate stores, and is helpful in improving concentration and healing.

Gotu Kola

Gotu Kola is and has been an extremely well used herb in India because of its ability to increase energy levels in times of stress and in the aging process in helping to restore normal energetic bodily functions. In recent years Gotu Kola's rise to fame has been in easing the pain associated with arthritis, rheumatics and other inflammatory diseases. It also contains other important ingredients which help in general circulatory problems and is often used in conjunction with the herb Brahmi in helping to restore memory. Brahmi and Gota Kola are two herbs which are being used more and more today by the elderly or for that matter by the middle aged who are aware of these herbs restorative properties.

Ground Ivy

Ground Ivy has been used in treating upper respiratory and chronic bronchial mucous problems where the phlegm is more difficult to release. Ground Ivy may also help to soothe coughs, to ease middle ear infections and sinus congestion. It is known as the "Glue Ear Remedy" of children helping to ease "Water Log" conditions including sinusitis, tinitis or even after an aeroplane flight where the ears haven't released.

Heartsease

Heartsease is a very complex herb containing many substances or actives which enabled the herb to help in a variety of conditions. It is helpful in releasing phlegm from the upper respiratory tract and may be used for helping painful inflammatory conditions. It can help remove excess waste fluid from the body, specifically for discharging skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. Heartsease's most appropriate role is in helping skin conditions, especially where there also exists Bronchial conditions and or painful joint conditions. For children, heartsease is used for treating blood disorders and phlegm conditions and its chief use is for moist skin conditions.

Hops

Hops has a long history of use as a sedative to encourage restfulness and sleep. Hops also reduces symptoms of nervous tension. Hops contains a bitter principle which helps in easing digestive disorders like constipation, colitis and nervous dyspepsia.

Hawthorn

Hawthorn is especially good for heart conditions. It helps with dilating the coronary arteries and helps to slow down and stabilize the many heart disturbances. It may help to ease palpitations and lower blood pressure. It may help in peripheral. circulation related to hardening of the arteries. It may also help to restore poor circulation to lower legs.

Helonias

Helonias is a chief herbal remedy to help in gynaecology and obstetrics. Helonias improves the secretory responses and cyclical functions of the ovaries, helping them to prepare for pregnancy. Helonias is recommended for irregular menstrual flow or for late cycles, uterine prolapse, relaxed lower pelvic muscles and to ease the sensation of abdominal dragging before the onset of the cycle. Helonias also helps in morning sickness, loss of cycle, menopausal conditions like hot flushes, and for inflammatory conditions of the fallopian tubes and or ovaries and mid cycle pain.

Motherwort

Nettle

Oats

Oats is a safe and effective restorative herb of the nervous system and is used in all states of debility, depression, anxiety, stress, shingles and general degenerative conditions. Oats stimulates both the motor and sensory nervous systems and acts as a central nervous system tonic. Oats is one of those herbs most widely used on the nervous system as garlic and echinacea is similarly used to combat colds and flu. Oats may help to lower total serum cholesterol levels by washing away bile acids in the digestive tract that would otherwise be converted to cholesterol. Scientific studies reveal that oats can also lower the bad LDL cholesterol levels. Oats also reduce the cravings for tobacco.

Pasque Flower

Pasque Flower is a wonderful herb for relaxing and calming nervous tissue and nervous tension. It can be used to reduce tension, stress or overactivity. The herb also helps when sleeping becomes difficult and is a potent antimicrobial herb, helping the body fight infection. Pasque Flower is also useful in treating painful menstruation; boils and skin eruptions, ovarian disorders and menopausal melancholy or depression.

Paeonia

Paeonia is an ancient Chinese herb and is said to nourish the blood and relieve spasm. The herb has been traditionally used over the years to control smooth muscle spasm, especially painful cramps during menstruation; angina and migraine headache. This herb may assist in memory loss, may ease muscle cramps and menstrual dysfunction and help with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Picrorrhiza

The herb Picrorrhiza is an Ayurvedic herb from India . Over the years Picrorrhiza has been found invaluable for restoring the immune function in acute and or chronic infections making it a great herb to be used in post viral syndromes like Ross River Fever, Bharma Forest and Glandular Fever. If you don't have the correct percentage of muscle you may age quicker.

Sage

Sage is specifically indicated to help inflammation of the mouth, tongue or throat and is used as a gargle or a mouth wash. Sage reduces excessive mucous production within the body. The herb has been traditionally used to treat excessive perspiration, sinusitis and the early stages of colds and flu, making it an invaluable herb in reducing fevers.

Sage can also be used to increase energy levels, alleviate bad breath, help to stimulate the regrowth or regenerate liver tissue and can help to decrease the itching and inflammation of insect bites or psoriasis.

Saw Palmetto

St John's Wort

St John's Wort is probably the most used herb in a herbalist clinic outside of Echinacea. St John's Wort can be used in restoring function to most of the various systems through out the body. The herb has a gentle, calming effect when taken internally, making it ideal for anxiety states, tension, irritability and if taken persistently it lifts depression and energy levels.

The lightening effect on the nervous system is not immediate and it is necessary to take the herb, not just for 2 - 3 weeks, but probably for two to three months. However when St John's Wort is combined with other herbs the relaxation effect can be felt almost immediately. St John's Wort has profound effect is on the immune system..

The herb has potent anti-viral agent, stimulating and improving lymphatic function. It is an important additive to any herbal mixture to improve conditions like the winter cold and flu, chronic fatigue, glandular fever, Ross River Fever, Bharma Forest fever and general run down states of the immune system. St John's Wort may also help to ease shingles, neuralgia, fibrositis and sciatica.

Skullcap

Skullcap may be used as a relaxant to the nervous system. It assists with neurological and neuromotor conditions including epilepsy, helping to reduce the severity and frequency of symptoms. Skullcap assists in states of nervous tension and debility and is often used as an antispasmodic and helps to regulate sleeping problems.

Thyme

Turmeric

Turmeric has many beneficial effects on the body and most of the health benefits occur as a result of the herbs "curcumin" content. Turmeric is an important addition when used with people who smoke because it helps to counteract some of the toxic effects associated with tobacco. Turmeric helps the gall bladder by increasing bile flow and therefore may help in lowering cholesterol levels.

In more recent years, Wild Yam has made a significant impact with its ability to help alleviate hot flushes of menopause and other menopausal conditions.

Wild Indigo

Wild Indigo has been traditionally used in the treatment of conditions especially of the upper respiratory tract. It helps tonsillitis, sore throats, swollen glands and is used to control fevers associated with persistent or aggressive local throat infections.
